The cost of cataract surgery in the US for someone without Medicare or private medical insurance has ranged from approximately $3,783 to $6,898 per eye in 2019.
This was according to a report prepared for All About Vision by leading eye care industry analytics firm Market Scope. In India cost is between INR 0.26 - 0.53 Lac.
Now, a staycation of 5 days plus the cost of a round trip from USA to India would be approx INR 1.30 lacs (booked 3 months in advance) which is a valid assumption.
The difference is still in excess of $5000 and being an accountant by training, it was tempting to take a look at the numbers in USA for whom this will be of interest.
According to a large study, nearly 50 percent of Americans do not enroll in vision coverage - so that routine visit to the optometrist has to be paid out-of-pocket.
Now, the insurance industry would also need to see this window of opportunity for a potential traveller to India, covering the surgery, the hospital stay & the air travel.
Sure, there may be other factors, cultural & racial, which may yet prevent this opportunity from blossoming to its full economic potential, just yet.
THE SECOND OPINION always evaluates risk and opportunity without seeing it as a zero sum game and that can mean lot of out-of-the-box thinking for customers.
